About

Rebates

A rebate is a financial incentive provided as a discount or refund that a buyer receives after purchasing a product or service.

Clear Talk About Rebates

Rebates are available in a couple of forms. Some rebates can be applied immediately at the time of purchase, while others require you to submit a claim or proof of purchase after buying the product to receive the rebate amount.

Examples of rebates for transitioning from gas to electricity:

Federal Rebates
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 offers substantial rebates to support homeowners in transitioning from gas to electric energy systems. Households earning less than 150% of their area's median income may qualify for rebates up to $14,000, with low-income households eligible for rebates covering 100% of their project costs. These rebates apply to various technologies, including up to $8,000 for electric heat pumps, $1,750 for electric water heaters, $840 for electric stoves and cooktops, and $2,500 for electric wiring upgrades. Additional rebates are available for insulation, air sealing, and converting from gas to electric systems, making the transition more affordable and accessible. These rebates can also be combined with income tax credits for even greater savings.

Home Energy Rebate Programs

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a federal law established in 2022, authorizes the US Dept. of Energy (USDOE) to administer the Home Energy Rebate Programs. Under this law, USDOE allocated $263 million in funding to the Illinois EPA Office of Energy to administer two programs: the Home Efficiency Rebates (Section 50121) and the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (Section 50122).
