Weatherization works best when you approach your home as a system
Before you replace equipment, upgrade your electrical system, or start making bigger changes to your home, take a close look at what your home is already doing—or not doing—to keep you comfortable.
Weatherization is about making your home tighter, better insulated, and more efficient so the energy you use doesn’t go to waste. The good news is that many weatherization projects are simple enough to do yourself. You don't need to turn your home into a construction site. Start by finding the places where outside air gets in, conditioned air gets out, and heat or cooling moves through areas where it shouldn't.
A DIY weatherization project can help you reduce drafts, improve comfort, protect your heating and cooling equipment, and potentially lower your energy use. Just as important, it gives you a better understanding of how your home works.

You don't necessarily need to replace your windows to improve their performance.
First, determine whether the problem is actually the window itself or the space around it. Weatherstripping can help reduce drafts around movable portions of windows and doors. Caulk can seal stationary gaps where appropriate.
For older windows, temporary interior window insulation products can also be useful during cold weather.
Replacing windows is a much larger investment. Don't assume replacement is the first or best weatherization step. Find the actual problem first.
Insulation slows the movement of heat. It does not stop air leakage.
That's why adding insulation without addressing significant air leaks may not solve the problem you're trying to fix.
Take a look at the insulation you can safely access. Is it present? Is it evenly distributed? Is it compressed, damaged, or missing in certain areas?
