A Homeowner's Clean Energy Journey Through the Five Phases

For years, we talked about making our home more energy efficient. We read articles about solar panels, saw advertisements for heat pumps, heard about tax credits, and watched our neighbors purchase electric vehicles. Everyone seemed to have a different opinion about what we should do first.
The problem wasn't a lack of information. There was almost too much information.
One contractor told us we needed solar right away. Another said we should replace our furnace before it fails. Friends recommended electric lawn equipment, induction cooking, insulation, batteries, and electric cars. Every conversation seemed to start in a different place.
We realized we didn't need another sales pitch. We needed a plan.
That's when we discovered the Future Proofing Us approach. Phase One – Get Clean, Green & Lean
The first surprise was learning that reducing our dependence on fossil fuels didn't begin with replacing equipment. It began by making smarter choices that were inexpensive, easy to accomplish, and immediately beneficial.
Our very first action step was enrolling in Community Solar. We had always assumed solar meant putting panels on our roof, but we learned we could support renewable energy without changing anything on our home. Signing up took less than an hour, and before long we were seeing credits on our electric bill.
That gave us confidence.
Next, we looked outside.
Instead of thinking only about the house, we started thinking about the property. We planted shade trees where they would eventually reduce summer cooling costs. We expanded our native garden, added more pollinator plants, and installed a small rain garden to better manage stormwater. We improved the soil around our landscaping and began using mulch more effectively to retain moisture.
These weren't just environmental improvements—they made our yard more beautiful, easier to maintain, and surprisingly more comfortable during hot summer afternoons.
Finally, we focused on reducing the energy we were already using.
We replaced old light bulbs with LEDs, adjusted thermostat schedules, unplugged electronics that constantly drew power, cleaned HVAC filters regularly, and became more conscious of when and how we used electricity. None of these changes were dramatic, but together they noticeably lowered our monthly utility bills.
Instead of spending thousands of dollars immediately, we were saving money while preparing for the next phase.
Phase Two – Get Buttoned Up
The second phase completely changed how we looked at our home.
Rather than asking, "What should we replace?" we began asking, "Where is our home wasting energy?"
We started with a DIY home energy assessment. Walking through each room with a checklist forced us to notice things we'd ignored for years.
Drafty windows.
Cold floors.
Warm rooms upstairs.
A basement that always felt damp.
Doors that leaked air.
Then we hired a professional energy auditor.
The report was eye-opening.
Our furnace wasn't actually the biggest problem.
The real problem was that our house leaked conditioned air almost everywhere.
That changed our priorities overnight.
Instead of replacing expensive equipment first, we sealed air leaks around windows, doors, plumbing penetrations, attic openings, and rim joists. We added insulation in the attic where it was desperately needed and improved weatherstripping throughout the house.
The difference was immediate.
The house stayed warmer during winter, cooler during summer, and much quieter all year long.
Even better, every future upgrade would now work more efficiently because the home itself had become more energy efficient.
We often tell friends that this was probably the smartest money we spent during the entire project.
Phase Three – Get Ready
By now we had a much better understanding of our home's future.
Our children would be leaving for college within a few years. We planned to stay in the house for at least another twenty years. Rather than making emergency decisions later, we decided to prepare the home now.
The first step was evaluating our electrical service.
An electrician reviewed our panel, calculated future electrical loads, and helped us determine what upgrades might eventually be necessary. Fortunately, we didn't need a complete service replacement immediately. We simply added a few dedicated circuits and planned for future capacity.
Having a roadmap removed a lot of uncertainty.
Then we started replacing smaller gas-powered items.
We bought an induction cooktop to try before replacing our range. Within a few weeks we wondered why we'd waited so long. Cooking became faster, the kitchen stayed cooler, and cleanup was easier than we'd expected.
Next came an electric lawn mower, string trimmer, and leaf blower.
No more gasoline cans.
No more oil changes.
No more loud Saturday mornings.
Those simple changes made us realize how much fossil fuel we had been using without really thinking about it.
One principle became our guide throughout the project:
Never replace gas with gas.
Whenever something reached the end of its useful life, we asked ourselves one simple question.
"What electric option should replace it?"
That mindset prevented expensive mistakes and kept us moving steadily toward our long-term goal.
Phase Four – Get Comfortable
Eventually, our aging gas water heater began showing signs of failure.
Years earlier we probably would have replaced it with another gas model without giving it much thought.
This time, we already had a plan.
We installed a heat pump water heater.
It used far less energy, qualified for incentives, and actually helped dehumidify our basement.
Next came the clothes dryer.
Replacing our old gas dryer with a heat pump dryer lowered energy use while eliminating another gas appliance from our home.
Finally, our aging furnace and air conditioner reached the point where replacement made financial sense.
Because we had already weatherized the home, improved insulation, and reduced heating and cooling demand, our contractor was able to install a smaller heat pump system than we originally expected.
That saved money on installation while providing more consistent comfort throughout the house.
Winter temperatures remained comfortable.
Summer humidity improved.
The house felt better in every season.
Most importantly, we had eliminated the largest source of fossil fuel use inside our home.
Phase Five – Get Off the Grid
The final phase had once seemed impossible.
Now it simply felt like the next logical step.
After reviewing our electricity usage over the previous two years, we installed rooftop solar sized specifically for our home's needs.
Because we had already improved efficiency and replaced major gas appliances thoughtfully, we didn't need as large a solar system as we originally imagined.
A few months later, we added battery backup for essential household circuits.
When severe storms rolled through our area, we discovered another benefit we hadn't fully appreciated.
While neighbors lost refrigeration, internet service, and lighting, our essential systems continued operating.
For the first time, we felt prepared instead of vulnerable.
Our home wasn't just cleaner.
It was more resilient.
Looking Back
People often ask how long the project took.
The answer surprises them.
Nearly six years.
Not because it was difficult.
Because we weren't in a hurry.
We replaced equipment when it made financial sense. We took advantage of rebates as they became available. We spread costs over several years instead of financing everything at once.
Each improvement prepared us for the next.
There were no expensive surprises because every decision fit into an overall plan.
Today our utility bills are lower.
Our home is quieter.
The indoor air feels cleaner.
Maintenance is simpler.
We spend less time worrying about aging equipment and more time enjoying our home.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is that our house doesn't feel like a science project.
It simply feels like a better place to live.
